Walk into any botánica and you will see shelves of candles sorted by color. That is not decoration. In folk tradition each color carries an intention, and choosing the right one is the first step of the ritual. Here is what the colors have traditionally meant, and how to match them to what you are asking for.
The traditional meanings
- Red: love and passion. Romance, desire, courage, and the energy to go after what you want. Also used for strength when you feel depleted.
- Pink: affection and self-love. Softer than red. Friendship, family harmony, healing a heart, being kinder to yourself.
- Green: prosperity and growth. Money, work, abundance, new opportunities, and anything you want to see flourish.
- Gold and yellow: success and clarity. Confidence, creativity, good news, and the sun's energy of vitality and optimism.
- White: peace and purity. Cleansing a space, calming the mind, new beginnings. White is also the all-purpose color when you are unsure which to use.
- Blue: calm and healing. Rest, patience, communication, and protection for the home.
- Purple: spirituality and wisdom. Intuition, meditation, connection to something greater than yourself.
- Black: protection and release. Absorbing negativity, breaking a bad streak, closing a chapter. Black is not a dark color in this tradition; it is a shield.
- Orange: energy and change. Momentum, ambition, and the push to start something new.
- Silver: the moon. Dreams, reflection, and the quiet, receptive side of life.
Matching color to intention
Ask yourself one simple question: what do I actually need right now? Not what sounds impressive, but what is missing. If the answer is money or a job, reach for green. If it is a relationship, red or pink. If your house feels heavy after an argument or a loss, white to clear it and black to protect it. If you cannot name it, white is always safe.
The Walter Mercado intention candle collection is organized the same way, by what you are asking for rather than by scent alone:
- Mucho Mucho Amor for love in every form.
- Prosperidad for abundance and opportunity.
- Paz for calm and a clear mind.
- Mal de Ojo for protection.
- Sol and Luna for energy by day and rest by night.
- Recuerdo and Día de Muertos for remembering the people we have lost.
How to light an intention candle
- Choose the candle for the intention, not the mood of the moment.
- Set it on a heat-safe surface away from drafts, curtains, and children.
- Before you strike the match, say what you are asking for in one clear sentence.
- Let the first burn go long enough for the wax to melt to the edges. This keeps the candle burning evenly for its whole life.
- Trim the wick to about a quarter inch before each burn, and never leave a flame unattended.
In the astrological tradition Walter Mercado came from, the stars incline; they do not compel. A candle works the same way. It does not do the work for you. It reminds you what you are working toward, every time you see the flame.
