Where the belief comes from
Almost every Latin family has a story about mal de ojo. A baby who would not stop crying after a stranger admired her. A run of bad luck that started right after someone looked at you with envy. The evil eye is the idea that a strong gaze, especially one carrying jealousy or ill will, can pass harm from one person to another without a word being spoken.
The belief is far older than any one country. Versions of it appear across the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and Latin America, carried by centuries of migration and trade. In Puerto Rico, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and across the Caribbean it became part of daily life, blended with Catholic prayer and folk remedies passed from abuela to nieta.
The signs people watch for
Tradition says mal de ojo shows up as sudden headaches, restlessness, unexplained tiredness, or a streak of small misfortunes. In babies, families often point to fussiness and fever that arrives after a visit. Whether or not you take these signs literally, the feeling behind them is real: sometimes you sense that someone's energy toward you is not kind, and you want to clear it.
How families protect themselves
The remedies are as varied as the families who keep them. Some of the most common:
- The azabache. A small black stone or charm, often pinned to a baby's clothing, meant to absorb the harmful gaze before it reaches the child.
- The red thread. A bracelet worn on the wrist as a quiet shield.
- The egg cleanse. An egg passed over the body and cracked into a glass of water to draw out and reveal the mal de ojo.
- Candles and prayer. Lighting a candle with a clear intention, a moment of silence, and a request for protection over the home and everyone in it.
Why a protection candle
A candle is one of the simplest rituals there is. You do not need special training, only a quiet minute and an honest intention. Lighting the Walter Mercado Mal de Ojo Protection Candle is a way to mark that moment: to say, out loud or in your heart, that your home is a place of peace and that negativity is not welcome here.
The spirit of mucho mucho amor is that you carry your own light. A protection ritual is not about fear. It is about choosing, on purpose, what energy you let into your life, and surrounding the people you love with something warm.
A simple ritual for your home
- Open a window for a few minutes to let stale air out.
- Place the candle somewhere central, away from drafts and anything flammable.
- Light it and take three slow breaths.
- Say your intention plainly: protection for this home, for the people in it, and for the ones far away.
- Let it burn for a while as you go about your evening, never unattended, and snuff it when you are done.
